With $585.00 in support to date, you might be wondering where the money went. Here's where:

* We paid April's hosting bill of $329 (May and June was paid already)
* We paid $80 for more tapes (pack of 5) for the backup
* [WORLD FIRST] Jonas had ice cream and a cappuccino on WQD's tab ($11) when installing the new tapes
* Put the rest into the piggiebank for the July hosting bill

Thanks guys, for hosting this site. I think most people have no clue what it takes to keep a place like this going. I used to own a forum for the saltwater aquarium hobby. I know when you get 1200 people on here at one time it takes some serious resources.

330 a month for a low bandwidth site seems like a ripoff

Bandwidth is dirt cheap. Of course unless you go over it, but we're good on that one. Unless we can afford our own MAE hookups and announce our own networks, we'll have to deal with that.

What costs money is the 5U we rent in a rack, power, standby power, remote reboot, the console server and port, the fact that our 5U have a seperate lock, the space for the backup filer, power for that, the weekly maintenance in which IronMountain comes and brings/takes tapes, etc.

For that, we have a very sweet deal. I (well, my employer) pay ~900 bucks for a similar setup every month in a different facility. And that one is much less aimed at keeping data safe and secure.

If we ever run into either HD or Bandwith issues, that's very easily fixed (well, HD I'd have to buy a new RAID enclosure, but that's ~100 bucks, once). More systems (for example moving the development system into the rack from my employer's rack if they ever get antsy about that), power and cooling issues, or backup issues, would cost much more.

jluster, what did all of that mean in simple english

I've re read it four times and still don't understand a single technical word of it :D

I guess it means its a pricey thing to do but its a fantastic resource so thanks for creating it
