Hello,

I am a noob. Today is my first day here. Today is also my attempt to quit.

I drink far too much. I smoke far too much.

I must also say that I am scared. This is a huge step.

Anyway, hello to all.

Hiya Artoo, and welcome. Have you checked out the diaries feature? It's a great place to start, you can begin your own diary there to keep track of your quit and your feelings about it.

Good luck on today, read, read, read, there is a lot of excellent advice here from people who know just where you're coming from!

Hey, Artoo, and welcome.

This is a huge step, but one you'll never regret. If you're on Day One, stock up on tart juices, water and non alcoholic drinks; eat small meals if you can; come to the shoutbox (the chat on the main forum page) if you need to talk; rest and try and take an Epsom Salts bath--people here swear it helps with the aches and pains.

There's a lot of support here, so think about starting a diary and feel free to ask.

Welcome Artoo,

You'll get lots of good advice and support here. Read lots and think about starting your own diary. It's good to keep a track of your progress and helps to get your thoughts out.

Have a good day.

I wrote "attempt" because the word "quit" scares the living daylights out of me.

Welcome Artoo

I don't think we have anyone from South Africa here. Start up a diary and tell us a bit about yourself.

I can understand how the future looks scary right now, but life can only get better. Really!!

The fear will leave you soon. Just get yourself through these first few days. Stay here is much as you can. We'll keep you company!

Would be great if you could take some time off work. Treat yourself like you're sick with a bad virus.

And I think you should worry about the smoking, a littler further down the road.

Artoo, you're in the right place if you're here. I'm pretty new myself and have quit so many times I've lost count. But this place and the people here have made this quit a "sticking quit."

You can do it. Stick close to this site and you'll be amazed at what happens.

All the best to you.

The tobacco I will worry about a little further down the road, it's the cannabis I have to chuck with the alcohol.

I would love to take some time off work, but my work load is unreal this week.

Welcome Art....

You'll be just fine....don't worry. Stick around here if you're lonely or anxious and talk about it.

Make sure you have a plan during your normal drinking time, and prepare for it.

Hi Artoo,

Is that a Ford Focus avatar?

Quitting seems daunting at first, but once you get a few days past you, you'll start to feel great, and it is all worth while.

Yeah that's my Ford Focus ST170 (Called the SVT in the states).

Well last night went quite well, I didn't need a drink at all. I gave my whiskey and brandy to my friend so that's now gone too. I think it really helped having visited here yesterday, I will definitely keep that up.

Artoo,

I've fallen flat on my face several times in my attempt to quit, always blaming others -
I can't quit now because of this or that. But once you realize that you are in control it gets far easier. Give yourself at least three days and check back with me. The fourth day will be easier and you will feel less anxious. I will help out whatever way I can.

I am actually doing quite well this week, although sleeping is a little difficult.

I tried with the diary but I found some of the users on the site very judgmental, so I found another site.

To those who have offered kind words, thanks very much.

Hey Artoo, I posted in your diary - don't sweat it - keep up with the journal. There's an "ignore" button you can use to simply ignore answers from those whose opinions rub you the wrong way. There are a lot of folks here who will not judge at all.

Take care.

Hi Artoo,
I am in the same boat as you, but things are beginning to change for me already. I smoke way too much, but my main concern, the drink, is already beginning to subside (loose its grip on me).
Stick with it, make the changes to your life on your own terms. A great help for me was Allen Carrs book the easy way to control alcohol. For what I paid for this book I would have spent easily in drink. (It has more than paid for itself).
All the best
Paul
