New here. Not too sure what the forum is about, but my overall first impression of it right off the bat is that it is a forum for recovering alcoholics, correct?

I'm in my twenties, have been drinking heavily for the last 6 years. For me, it is also something that is to be used medicinally, which I have done to help alleviate a whole range of problems in my life: social anxiety; college pressure (presentations), you name it. I have had some pain in the liver region for some time now, and I think it might be getting worse. I have been on so many benders over the past few years - and since leaving college - that I honestly think I have out drank probably about 99% of kids my age. It's hit me financially recently as well, which I am just now starting to figure out that it's not exactly the cheapest "recreation." Well, I'll just keep it brief for my first post. Probably post again soon.

Your first impression is correct.

This is a place for people who have quit, are trying to quit or would like to quit drinking. We have many people here that are at a crossroads in their life and are thinking about quitting and several who have been quit for 3 years or longer. We are a variety of ages, come from all walks of life and are located in different places throughout the world.

Lots of us drank hoping to self medicate anxiety and depression. The irony is that alcohol actualy makes both of those problems worse in the long run. Quitting now in your 20's is a wonderful idea. It only becomes more difficult as you grow older.

Have you thought about having your liver pain checked out? I think it would be a good idea.

I'm thinking about doing it pretty soon. I recently was approved for this form of medicare; finally have health insurance after probably like 7 years. I've come to a point in my life where I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown (I had one previously already), and I am pretty suicidal as well. Don't mean to be too frank, but this is an anonymous board. Every immediate male on my fathers side are/were alcoholics. My grandfather was drinking straight vodka at 76, and he was still there. I don't know if it's in my genes or what, but I hit it HARD. It's that Nordic blood in my vains. But no, I am not really proud of that part of my life.

White Lightning,

Welcome to WQD. You can be as frank as you wish here. If you are feeling suicidal please talk to someone. You can call 1.800.442.HOPE if you need to. I think at some point or another we have all had similar feelings. It's not easy and it helps to talk to someone about it.

We're here for you and will help any way we can! I am also in my 20's and I quit drinking 3 weeks ago. I am 28 to be exact. I have quit in the past and wish I had stayed quit long ago. In fact, I wish I had never drank in the first place.

It's nice when you can finally take your life back. You will love it!

Best wishes and hope to see you around the forum often!

~Mandy ;)

Welcome white lightning; good choice with the start, and at a good age too.

White Lightning - that's strong stuff. The stuff park benches are made from.

Thanks for the words. Is it pretty cool around here?

Let me say, I could probably sit here all day and go on about how messed up my life has been, but it's been crazy. Lots of stories in a short span of years. Rolled a car while drunk; had half a police force and helicopters chase me after I fled; shopping at Wal-Mart for mouthwash to consume, sleeping med consumption. It's been no fairytale, and if someone passes in my family, I think I will fall into a bottle until my end. I'm hanging by a thread here.

I always worried that, I too, would drink if someone if my family passed away. I realize now though that it would only add to the misery. The problem would only grow worse. It definitely wouldn't fix it. I just hope that when the time comes (and yes, death is inevitable, as we all know) that I will have the strength and the resolve to not turn to the bottle. I hope the same for you.

You can do this. You just have to be bound to your goal of not drinking. Easier said than done sometimes though, isn't it? Just keep thinking of all the reasons life will be so much better without booze in your life. I can promise you that it will be better.

We're all here for you. The thread you're hanging onto just turned into a rope. You have us to help you hang on. We will try to do all that we can. At least as much as our words will allow. Keep reading and posting here on WQD.

Yes, yes it is. These people have helped me accomplish what I thought was an absolute impossibility. And that is to consider and reach for a future without alcohol in it. There are many ups and downs and it is not easy but the more you visit, read and post here, the easier it becomes to make that transition. I am still strugging on a day to day basis myself, but the support I find here is truly a blessing. Please stick around and help us help each other. Go to the diaries and journal section and start a journal. You are young and you have so much to live for. Always remember, suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.
