i read dr. oz's book, 'you, staying young" and he lists the vitamins that he thinks are necessary. niacin was one and b12 and b5 and some other b. so, i bought niacin and b-50 thinking i would cover all the b's. i just took them, and was sitting on the computer and could feel my face start heating up and tightenig. i looked in mirror and realized that my face looked like total sunburn and felt tight and stung to the touch, just like a sunburn. my palms were sweating and itchy. i ate a bowl of cereal and drank two glasses of water to see if i couldnt flush it out. it was not a good feeling. anybody know what may have caused this and should i stop both or one of these vitamins. the last time i took vitamins, a stip of those shaklee, i threw up. it was awful. maybe my system isnt ready for that much health.

Hi there Me Too...
I used to purposely take Niacin to get that Niacin flush, though it is annoying and miserable. Some health practitioners claim that it reduces cravings for alcohol and that the flush is actually good for you, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. But, it never reduced my cravings and I didn't like the flushy feeling.
Whatever you do, do not buy the timed release Niacin as I have read those can be toxic to your liver, especially if you do have any liver damage. The timed-release actually reduces the incidences of flushing, but it isn't good for you. The flush in and of itself isn't an indication of anything bad going on, it's just annoying and uncomfortable.
There is a no flush Niacin called inositol hexanicotinate but I do not think that it is supposed to have the same benefits as the kind that makes you flush, Niacinimide. But, probably adequately supplies you with the niacin you need. Probably Niacinimide is in the B50 complex and you probably took the other form when you took the straight Niacin.
If you read about Niacin and decide you want to give it another go, you can up your intake of it slowly and that is supposed to reduce the flushing. But, you should check all this out with your doctor too. If your liver is taxed, this might not be a good thing.

An old boyfriend of mine showed up at my work one day and he was freaking out. Apparently he had taken a LOT of Niacin to flush out his system before a random drug test at his job. He was a TOTAL stoner. He was BRIGHT red and in pain so I stuck him in the walk-in freezer in the back of the store. I kinda forgot about him being in there because I got busy and he hurt so bad that he didn't want to get out. By the time I went back to tell him he needed to take a break, he was purple lol..
He passed the drug test and, by the end of the week, had developed a TERRIBLE rash all over his face. I mean, he looked like a burn victim and cryed every day about it. He confessed to his doctor what he had done and the doc said his face was messed up because of all the toxins released from his body by the Niacin. He looked that way for over a month!!
Needless to say, Niacin CAN be good for the body I think but it really just scares me!

Wow, for over a month? That would be horrible... It made me think of the rash analogy in Carr's book, about if you had a rash on your face, and it only went away if you put on ointment, but then came back bigger and stayed away for shorter amounts of time each application. But all you had to do to get rid of the rash was to stop taking the ointment, your face would heal after an amount of time, and it was really the rash ointment causing it to get worse... anyways I digress. It just reminded me of it!
