Has anyone tried this? I've always wanted to, but of course it seems a little scary. My ears find kind of plugged and my equilibrium's a little off lately.

My local spa offers this too. It sounds like it would feel great. I have not done it so I am curious to see the responses you get

My mom turned my wife on to it. She bought them for me, my wife and herself. We did it one evening laying on the couch. I have to admit, having a large burning wax funnel right next to your face is uncomfortable.

While the thing is burning, you hear sucking noises in your ear and it's not really uncomfortable. When finished, you cut open the remaining funnel and see the junk that was "pulled" from your ear. I can't tell you if it's real or not. There is stuff in the funnel that looks like earwax. I tried cleaning my ears with a q-tip afterward and got nothing out. My wife swears it's real. says she can hear better afterward. Who knows. It could just be the stuff dripping down into the funnel.

I think it would be so satisfying to pull out a big hunk of wax from your ear. I guess I'm sick too. I read the report that said the "gunk" was produced whether it was in your ear or not. Shoot.

It's a fraud! I kept trying it and it wasn't working so I just assumed I was doing it wrong. I felt cheated and gullible when I found out it doesn't work for anybody./

This doesn't work. I got my ears plugged on vacation in Italy. This is all the local drugstore could provide. It was scary and not effective.

Suggestion if you don't really want to go to the doctor; get an ear wax removal kit with drops and one of those water squirting devices. Apply the ear drops and a few hours later try the water squirt. It worked well for me.

It doesn't sound like much fun. I think I'll let the hearing I have be satisfactory to me. Like someone said already, just go to CVS, Walgreens, etc and get something OTC.

Jasper

Ok, Ok. But OTC counter is so boring. :D Although I did get my neti pot at Walgreens (my nasal irrigation system, I know how to party!).

Ha Ha! This made me laugh. Maybe you should get a bloodpressure cuff and footbath and you'll be in business. I was just looking up Netti Pot on the internet a couple of nights ago...Believe it or not, there is a demonstration on Youtube...seriously. Why would a NettiPot be more beneficial that a simple saline solution spray from the drugstore.

I do the occasional neti pot. I have mold spore allergies and it helps. I think the neti pot is better than a nasal spray, because with the neti pot, the solution is flowing through your nasal passages, and out the other side. The nasal spray you just squirt it up in your nose. Also, the neti pot is kinda fun.

I may have to invest in the Netti Pot then because this saline stuff is not doing the trick....dry, dry, dry.

With the Neti Pot, one pours a large quantity of saline solution through the nasal cavity, not just a tiny mist of saline. My pot holds at least a cup. I pour one pot through each side.
I don't know much, but my ma used to tell me that one could drown
on a tbl of water. I think yur playin' with death.

Our bodies are amazing homeostatic machines. IF we let them do what they are programmed to do.
Snorting saline or putting hot candles in the ear are not part of the homeostatic mechanisms that protect us.
While these things are relatively harmless if used as directed-- serious complications can occur.

The worst complication that I know of is a 18-year-old female who did routine "saline nasal irrigations"-- she developed staph meningitis and is currently on the ventilator in ICU. She will be an organ donar. The source of her fatal menigitis is presumed to be sinus infection with MRSA-- washed into the highly vascular meninges by the harmless saline irrigations.

I'm getting a humidifier then.

Jasper

Wow Lia, I've never heard anything negative about it. My doctor was the one who actually recommended it. There have been studies done here at UW Madison which show its effectiveness for sinus infections. I've heard a lot of skepticism about ear candling, but never about the neti pot. Interesting, I'll have to do some more reading.

debrox ear drops are what most people use. I know all the riskd presenting foriegn things into ANY orafice...but I think if done correctly is probably ok. That having been said I don't knwo why it sounds so good to me...never have ear wax build up. I'm a dork...that's the answer:p

I've done this procedure a couple of times and I found that afterwards I did not hear any better and my equilibrium wasn't any different. In fact, my ears felt exposed as if important protection had been removed. I was shocked at all of the crazy stuff that came out of my ear, though!

I'm thinking about trying butt candling. I've been constipated for a few days now and I heard that it really helps to suck all that stuff out. The only problem is, If you pass gas the flaming funnel becomes a flame thrower.

I might set my arse on fire.

I went to the doc because my ears were having trouble popping coming down when i flew on airplanes. They irrigated both ears, and it was rather disturbing how much wax they got out of there! I mean tons, it was gross. :D I think it may have had something to do with being in the ocean a lot and the salt building up as the water dried. Then wax stuck to that and caused build up. I know some other surfers who have had to have their ears irrigated several times.

Lia~~

i cannot believe you got this gross thing back on front page. :D

It is BEST to do what you did and have the doc's office irrigate your ears. And they can provide you with a syringe to use with gentle pressure and warm saline to loosen wax. Remember- wax is there for a purpose (to protect us from infection)-- it is only when there is large buildup that it should be removed. Nothing larger than your little finger should go in your ear. love mom.

Read Ronnies article, it does not work, all the residue is from the candle itself!

Finally, the post I've been looking for!

I went to the docs on monday and told him I was deaf in my left ear. He had a look and said it was blocked with wax. He didn't prescribe anything but said the best thing to soften wax is olive oil in the ear 3 times a day. Currently 5 days in to 'softening', off to get them syringed on monday.

I'll keep you posted....one question, do you get to keep the wax? Was thinking about making a candle for my ears out of my own ear wax.........i need help.

Why didn't he wax them then and there? I'm not sure the olive oil thing is worth the effort. I have had them done a couple of times and it takes a couple of minutes. I did it myself once too, with a syringe and warm water and it was fine. Not saying you should necessarily try it.

Just following the doctors advice on the olive oil thing. He said if you don't soften the wax first it can be difficult / painful to remove.

Wax on, wax off

My boyfriend did them and swore by them.. but I saw a special on TV and they said it does nothing.

They are also illegal in Canada which kinda makes me wonder why or what happened to make them illegal.
