I have not road one in like 30 years. I was riding it a bit in the yard. I killed it like 10 times. Anyone have any pointers. It is one up and 4 down. A yamaha 650.

I don't have a clue on how to ease in to second and remember the back brake or front brake for that matter

Rich, please take a class.

I am dead scared of motorcycles -- most organ donors come from motorcycle accidents in this area. Please be careful.

Does your helmet mess up your hair?

I agree with Lia; take a class. I had a blast in motorcycle class and it's a lot easier (and safer) than trying to figure it out yourself. You've got some solid boots, and you're not riding around in tank top and shorts, or anything like that, right? :)

I ask because I wiped out on my brand new bike wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I was riding it before I took the class and I totally screwed up trying to downshift coming off a hill and into a corner. Made the classic mistake of looking down... then going down. The road rash was nasty and it took a year for my knee to recover from having a 600-lb bike grind it into the road at 30mph. So don't be a big dummie like me! :D

What can driving around a bunch of cones help any??

Why would you down shift coming off a hill?

I shot up the hill in second and then the road curved sharply just after the summit.

Driving around the cones lets you make all the stupid mistakes in a parking lot so ya don't make them on the road like me.

I have had 6 different motorcycles and all of them shifted one down and four or five up. If you are killing it when you are starting off I think it is because you are shifted to the first "up" which is possibly second gear. Try shifting 1 down from neutral for first then up through four for second to fifth.

Does it resemble this?:

If you have a 25 dollar head, buy a 25 dollar helmet!!!!!

You want one that is certified and a decent one will be 150 to 250 minimum. SPEND THE MONEY

Oh, don't buy it on Ebay either, If it has had a strike it may not show but it won't protect you, You need a good fit for it to work right.

If only I’d known. I just sold my large leather bike pants to a fat guy at work (lost 57 lbs since I was a beer monster). I'm told by one of you countrymen, that I’m supposed to call them chaps, but I don’t believe it. Perhaps we can form a Q bike gang. We’ll be all menace and attitude when we roar into town for a Sarsaparilla. I’m off for some advanced training this Sunday – the guys there are all beards and beer guts. A lot of them smoke pipes too. I did cone training too – and haven’t hit one since.

Rich I agree with Joe and the others who suggested a class.
The courses of cheap, easy to find, and don't take up a lot of time.
They are PACKED with all sorts of great information and everything else
you will need to bond with your new bike and get all kind of "road ready"
for the summer. There are no downside and tons of benefits.

Ride on brother...

I just bought a regular helmet from Meijers for $50 it is DOT. No face mask but it is a full helmet. I also bought one on Ebay that has the face mask. I am going to take that $75 dollar coarse That is the one so you can get your full liscense. Right now I can only drive in day light and no riders. I have a school parking lot I can practice at in back of my house. The bike is pretty fast I hear it does 60 in 2nd and it has 3 speeds after that. Yes first gear is down and 4 up. That is why I kept stalling it.

Ok I took it out for about a 40 mile drive and other then a S curve had no problems. What gear do most people take tight turns at 2nd?? Not quite sure on the down shifting thing. I tried once to take the turn in first but that was to jumpy. Last time I tried to take it in whatever gear I was in and that really sucked

Brake before you enter the curve, then downshift to the gear that matches your speed...and keep your mouth closed:D:D

2nd or 3rd for tight turns. You lose a lot of control (and power) in anything higher. I was told to aim for a minimum of 6000 revs – it will feel more controlled. Along with keeping my head up (vision fixed as far ahead as you can see), the low gear on tight corner thing is my main issue at the moment.

If you fancy doing the Wildhogs thing count me in – I see you in the in the Travolta role.

Jen’s advice about protective clothing is spot on too

Please don't ride in the rain. Too many people care about you and don't want to see your head cracked.

Rich
06-02-2007, 11:57 AM
Thanks everyone. I will try 2nd since it is much easier at this stage in the game to count by starting at first then recall what gear I am in. The thing is I have this tight S curve everytime I go to work. The rest is all pretty much straight but this turn you have to go 25 in a good handling car. I know if I click until the gears quit I am in first so then just one up. I know it will come natural soon

Tom..
06-02-2007, 02:20 PM
Rich,

More important than worrying about what gear your in or driving in the rain or negotiating a tricky S curve, you need to wear a cape along with your helmet when you ride.

Do you think it's just by chance that the Kenivels wore capes when they attempted all of those crazy cycle stunts? No.

They've crashed tons of times, doing far more dangerous than just driving to work and they lived to tell about it each and every time.

The cape's no joke my friend, go get one. (do it for me)

Tom

Rich
06-02-2007, 02:40 PM

06-02-2007, 03:12 PM
Pain in the ass? I'm trying to help you here, keep you safe and i'm a pain in the ass??

Ouch.

I think you can save money and get a full spandex riding suit that comes with a cape. It's cheaper than just getting the cape separate.

Remember about the spandex riding suit Rich... potato goes in the front of the pants.

:)
Ya Right Joe. I have over 400 miles on it now and am feeling pretty comfortable. I did end up in a feild a sidewalk and gravel on the side of a turn. I only lost control in the field, that was because I went down a five foot ditch. I was trying to hurry up and turn after a stop sign because a car was coming. Well I went a bit to fast and by the time i grabbed the brake I was going down a 5 foot decline. I ended up half standing at the bottom of ditch in a corn feild the motorcycle was on the ground . The car stopped and asked if I was OK. I bet I looked pretty stupid. I did not turn around and I had my helmet on, no one could see my face LOL. But the lesson here was never be into big of a hurry after a stop sign

I got my 2003 Yamaha V Star 650 eight days ago. It's not the biggest or the baddest, but it's mine. 14 years ago I gave up a free Suzuki 850 before the birth of my fist son. I didn't want to make any orphans and thought it best. I always said when they graduated HS I would get another bike. Well they are 14 and 11 now. With cost of gas so high I started riding the bus. It's brutal here in Louisville. It takes so long and is so much trouble very few people here utilize it. It is a horrible system compared to many other cities. After the Super Bowl I decided to quit drinking. So far so good. Well I need some sort of reward in life. A night of drinking is gone. So I get to thinking again about the motorcycle. Yes it's sooner than I had planned but so many factors came together and it just seems right. So I get the bike, ride to work three out of four days, and the bus only once(not ready for bad weather riding yet). Today I went on my first organized ride. A group of about 60 bikes from the Christian Motorcycle Association. Nice bunch of folks. I find out that some of them have had addiction problems and have beaten them too. Tonight I go out to a bar and then a bar and grill with two of my buddies. One is casually drinking the other quit a couple of years ago. I have a Sprite and a water at the second place. Afterwards, I take a nice night cruise the long way home. The best part I don't have to worry about the effects alcohol will have on me and whether or not I'll crash or get pulled over because I didn't drink anything. I won't have a hangover in the morning and will sleep well, wondering how good tomorrow might be. I think I'm starting to really like this sobriety thing.

Rich
04-27-2008, 03:54 AM

Thursdays were always big booze nights for me so when I get home from work, I take my bike and blast off for a 100-200 miles. Sometimes I'm tired the next day but nowhere near as tired as 5 hrs sleep, 10+ drinks and the resulting hangover.

When I think about how drunk I was some of the times I rode my motorcycle, it is truly frightening. One time in particular almost makes me want to cry. I only crashed because of it once when I crashed my moped as a kid. It was one of the first times I ever drank.

Sweet ride Canyoncarver. I see where you get your screen name from. They stir my sould and are my best form of therapy too. I once saw an ad in the paper offering motorcycle therapy. His slogan was "you don't have any problems that a ride on my motorcycle won't cure". It's like there is something magic about riding. I mostly ride on the street these days, but after a good day of dirt bike riding I come to work the next day and feel exactly the same way I used to feel after "scoring" with a new woman back in my single days. Confident, happy, energized. I can sometimes get that from a street ride, but I have so many dead and mangled friends at this point that I won't ride fast enough to get that feeling from a road ride. Maybe a track day is in order?

I took a two year ride from 2003-2005 on my BMW GS. Would have been a much better time if I had quit drinking first.

Thanks Pete. I hear ya about track vs. street. I like riding street but too have seen my share of carnage...don't even want to get into it, you know the deal. I have done some track days, but it's such a commitment to plan, load up, treck out there, spend the time/money.... mostly these days I'm happy to get a good early morning brisk ride in at a very sane pace. It's not knee down at 90mph, but some of the goatier tight twisties offer a good level of challenge w/o that high speed risk factor.

I went up Palomar this morning, 200 mile loop from my house - left at 6:30, back by 10:30AM before the summer squids start dominating the roads. On the way down, I counted 9 cop cars, 3 fire engines and a couple of ambulances heading up the mountain. Not sure if they were just getting ready, or already had to scrape someone off the road.

You took a 2 year ride???? Wow - tell us about that!

We have the same "cops" situation on Skyline Drive here in California. It's so popular that it's not worth going there on weekends.

My two year ride involved sauntering from California down to Argentina. Then I shipped the bike to asia and then over to Russia to ride across siberia and Mongolia. Then I did all the countries whose name ends with"stan" then Iran, turkey, Syria, Jordan Egypt and all of Africa. Then shipped the bike from Capetown to NYC and rode back to California. It was the longest route around the world I could come up with. Try it sometime :)

Ha! You didn't even have to say BMW bike - could've guessed from that description...you iron butt bmw guys are quite the adventure riders! I'm more of a fair weather weekend rider and occasional commuter; at one point I did own a vfr for about 3yrs w/the intention of doing some longer runs...but it never materialized...I think it would have interfered too much with my drinking

Ahh Skyline, my riding career started on 9, 92, 84, Bonny dunes, etc, etc... VERY familiar with that area. Some awesome roads there in the bay area, I miss those days quite a bit. Though I do hear you loud and clear about cops and wreckless riders/drivers - like you said, some summer weekends it wasn't even worth going up there; just too dangerous to enjoy it. In my first year of riding there, I witnessed ~6 accidents and saw a couple guys get life-flighted out. I wouldn't be surprised if we've bumped into each other at some point...small world :)

I haven't been sober too long, but I'm really starting to enjoy being back on the bike w/a clear head again. I'm once again learning and honing my skills rather than just trying to push through the hangover.

Rich, you made a fantastic choice for your first bike. Most people don't have the sense to get something basic and functional for a first ride...rather they go for power and bling. By getting a used older bike, you have learned and will learn so much more than by getting a newer machine that masks all your mistakes.

You will appreciate your new bike that much more too!

What type of bike are you thinking of getting? I have my eye on a Sportster after this season. The 1200 model, as opposed to the 883.
I was thinking about that, but is it a good bike to ride 2 on?

I had to get my back tire off my motorcycle today. It was bald as hell and I did not know it. Really was not to bad it was cylinder driven, it took maybe a half hour to get off. I did not change it It is going to cost $100 for the tire and someone else to put the tire on. I felt naked without it

I sometimes change my own tires, which takes some special tools. It all depends on what the cost at the dealer is.

Price sounds about normal. Of course, you only get a fraction of the miles on a motorcycle tire as you do on a car tire. That makes up for all the money you thought you were saving on gas. :p

I'm trying to resist the bait of the "naked" part at the end......it's hard, but I can do it....

I used to change the rubber on tubed dirt bike tires when I was a teenager but gave up after popping tubes a few times at the very last part of putting the tire back on.
I'm pretty sure my local shop charges $25 per tire, esp if you buy the tire from them and bring the rim/tire to them only. Shop around.

OK, OK, maybe Im a little touchy here, Im 40 and Im thinking about buying a Corvette and I have heard this at least 20 times recently ARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!:mad::mad: Or how about this one, "you cant buy a corvette until your divorced and at least 50 years old". Oh yeah and I'm well above average in endowment as well. If I buy a sports car, Corvette or Mustang, I'm going to have buy some just for men and drive around with my pecker hanging out. Have fun ridin today Rich (before and after the bike ride  )

Do see my post re my partner and his bike below .....push bike that is! He is 48. I rest my case :D

I have rediscovered the joys of cycling and just been on a 10 mile bike ride with my partner

Let me tell you the saga of men and bikes, no correction, my man and his bike....ps, before today we hadn't been cycling for 18 months as he was sure he had impaled his ass on the saddle and found it difficult to sit down for three days ..... hahahahaha

Before we could even contemplate getting on the bike we HAD to go to the local supermarket and get speacialised shorts WITH padding AND vaseline!!!!

I know, I know.....men always say it is us, the fairer sex that moan continuously, but this just isn't true.

Anyway, £25.00 later and a pair of shorts that looked packaged with pampers (nappy/diaper) in the crotch area, he arrived at my house.

Coming up the drive looking ever so pleased with his new 'gear' and walking like john wayne minus his horse he exclaimed "I'm ready"

A two hour shopping and getting ready time later and we set off

I nearly fell off my bike when he explained the delay was because he had to apply his vaseline to stop his delicate skin chaffing.........Holy shit I thought, here was me thinking we were just going on a gentle cycle ride along the coast. My man had prepared for the tour de france. Bless.

It was fabulous scenery and weather and I feel like I have really achieved something healthy today

Rich

He owns a painting buisness so he could not drive it to work. He has not plated it for the last 2 years. He just never has felt like riding it anymore. I have seen ones like it going for around 6000. It has never been torn down, souped up or abused. The Harley-Davidson battery is 100% and comes with a plug-in battery tender. Less than one thousand miles on tires.

They really bounce nicely, I suggest you get your leg out from under it like I should have done, and "surf" it to a stop should you find yourself in the same scenario!

:D :D :D

That was a lot of fun, riding that bike, enjoy but beware that with motorcycles, its really not a matter of "IF" you put it down, but WHEN you put it down.

Oh and on helmets - i bought one for the $25 head, and while it protected me, it also cracked in half on impact, and as a side note, whenever I head checked to change lanes, the damn thing would turn sideways and I would be blinded! Buy the good one... LOL

Hey all!

It's been a long time since I've made an appearance here, but here goes... I ride all the time ('02 Honda 1100 Sabre) - about 5K to 7K miles a season (and the season isn't long in Minnesota). Speed and forgetting to predict the worst are the two biggest enemies to a cyclist. If you are in a hurry, drive your car. Always ride as if everyone earns extra money and a big tax break when they hit you. :)

I saw a drunk driver hit a guy on a brand new Harley this summer. The biker's legs were snapped in two. It didn't make me quit riding, just reminded me to always ride with caution and expect the unexpected. Besides, who wants to be laying in a hospital at age 106 dying of nothing?

I hope everyone is doing well, and kicking that ol' AV's arse when necessary!!! :D
